How to get along with a limited vocabulary

No greater comfort for the learner of English can be imagined than that inconspicuous but magic verb "to get".
When it gets cold in New York, you might say, and the weather gets on his nerves, the visitor can get a ticket to Florida and, after getting a message to his friend in Miami that he should get him at the airport, can get on a plane. If his friend gets over his surprise and doesn't get impatient at the delay of the plane, he will get hold of the foreigner guest at the airport gate. He will, of course, know what has got to be done, will get a cab and tell the driver to get going. They'll soon get to the hotel, get registered, get a quick meal and perhaps get into their bathing suits and get into the water. It won't take the visitor long to get used to the Florida climate, even if it gets him down a bit at first. It is clear that a modest pocket dictionary will enable the foreigner not only to get by but to get along famously for a week or two on the nearly inexhaustible resources of that little verb "to get".
